In 2019, the City of Ely Council voted unanimously to award the Freedom of the City to the Ely Detachment No 3 Company Cambridgeshire Army Cadet Force and the 1094 (City of Ely Squadron) Air Training Corps. This was an award close to the heart of the late Cllr Mike Rouse.
The Certificates state just why this Freedom has been bestowed:
“For the long and valuable service the Corps/Cadet Force has rendered to the young people of Ely and district and their contribution to civic life.
The Council recognises the dedication of all the officers, cadets and supporters and the value that the training, discipline and citizenship skills instilled by the Corps give to the wider community and the nation.
That as an expression of the high esteem in which the Corps/Company is held they should be awarded the Honorary Freedom of the City of Ely.
The City is proud of you and proud of those who have served before you in these two fine organisations. Our city holds you in high esteem and congratulates you all on the achieving of this award.
It’s the highest honour the City can award and it’s a public record of appreciation that will stand for all time. Your community acknowledges who you are, what you stand for and what contribution you and your predecessors have made to our common life. This empowers you because it encourages, affirms and strengthens you and enables you to grow in confidence and in commitment to the values that are at the core of all that you do.
