Michael Banyard

Mike re-joined the City of Ely Council in 2023 as a representative for the Cathedral ward. He serves on the Personnel, Finance & Governance and Tourism and City Centre committees, represents the Council on the Ribe twinning committee and as a rep for Stuntney Village Council.

Mike arrived in Ely in 1969 to teach, at Needham’s School in their then new building, additonally at Ely High School for Girls and at the City of Ely College. He taught in three Service Children’s Secondary Schools in Cyprus, Hong Kong and Germany, and after early retirement returned to the Far East, before prepariing for Ordination in Cambridge, becoming Curate and then Rector in the Three Rivers Group of parishes, near Newmarket. He and his wife Helen kept thier house in Ely. Mike now serves as a Priest Vicar in Ely Cathedral and helps other churches when they ask.

I firmly believe that Ely is a great place to live and work, and will make a considered and thoughtful contribution to the work of the Council, so that quality of life is enhanced for everyone, and all can flourish.
